On January 3rd, 2013, after a routine colonoscopy and a series of follow up tests, I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. In February of this year, I underwent major surgery to remove the cancerous tumor from my body. For the past 3 months and the next 4 months, I have been and will continue to undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatment with the goal of eliminating any remaining cancer cells in my body.
Shortly after my diagnosis I knew I was going to need a partner in this fight. There was so much to learn and many critical decisions to be made. I reached out to LIVESTRONG for help. Within days, LIVESTRONG’s cancer navigation services helped me put a game plan in place and they have proven to be an invaluable partner ever since. LIVESTRONG helped with a wide range of services all at no charge, thanks to the generous donations of LIVESTRONG supporters. NOW, it’s my time to pay it forward.
Earlier this year, I ran the Austin Marathon course alone, 10 days before schedule because my surgery conflicted with the marathon date. My friends from LIVESTRONG and the Austin Marathon ran with me and greeted me at the finish line on that day and have stood with me during this fight. From that day forward, my wife Jennifer and I have stayed committed to keeping cancer from stealing the joy in our lives.
In 2015 I we will be running the Austin Marathon as part of Team Choose Joy, with a team goal of raising $100,000 to help cancer fighters just like me. I created “Team Choose Joy” and my good friend Bart Yasso, Chief Running Officer of Runner’s World magazine has joined us as our team captain. We are also joined by Co-captain Iram Leon, a fellow brain cancer survivor. Several others will be joining us as virtual group leaders in NY, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and other cities throughout the US on that day.
Please join us in helping to raise money to help those fighting cancer, either by making a donation or joining our team and choose to make a difference in the lives of other cancer fighters.
