My husband, Matt, reached his five-year remission mark last year after being diagnosed with stage IV Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2008. Despite the many challenges along his cancer-fighting journey, in the end he was incredibly lucky. His cancer was treatable, and the eight powerful rounds of chemo didn't phase him as much as they could have.

Shortly after he went into remission, I decided to train for the LIVESTRONG 5K Challenge in his honor. I couldn't even handle a mile, and used to have nightmares about running! But I told myself that if he could beat cancer, I could handle 3.1 miles to honor his fight. I've had the running bug ever since, and this will mark my third race fundraising on behalf of LIVESTRONG.

In 2012, I joined Team Kate as part of Team LIVESTRONG to honor Kate Voth, a friend battling stage IV melanoma. Running was her passion, and she one day hoped to become an ultramarathoner. When Kate's cancer continued to progress and her doctors told her she could no longer run, Team Kate was formed to support her. On race day in February of 2013, hundreds of bright yellow Team Kate shirts were everywhere, and Kate's story even made the news. It was the most money a group had raised in Team LIVESTRONG history.

Before passing in June at just 27 years old, she expressed a desire to have Team Kate continue her legacy. Our goal is to collectively raise $50,000 and create the Kate Voth Endowed Memorial Fund, a permanent gift to the LIVESTRONG Foundation that will honor her memory and live on in perpetuity. The funds we raise will be used to help provide access to programs, treatment options, fertility preservation, emotional support, and insurance and financial information for thousands of people affected by cancer.

Thanks and LIVESTRONG,

The LIVESTRONG Foundation has come a long way since 1997. Over 15 years ago, the Foundation’s first fundraising event, Race for the Roses, was held in Austin, Texas. Over the years, Race for the Roses has grown and transformed in to what today is known as Team LIVESTRONG, engaging thousands of walkers, runners, triathletes and cyclists in the fight against cancer. United by the cause and fueled by the amazing stories of survivorship, Team LIVESTRONG has raised nearly $70 million since its inception.
