My name is Devin Schmuckal. I am a 6th grader at Lakeside Middle School. I swim year-round at Chattahoochee Gold and for the CRC Stingrays over the summer. I am very excited to be swimming in this event and using my passion for my sport to be able to help this great cause.
I want people to become aware that cancer is a disease that can affect anyone and at any age.
Personally, cancer has affected my family. I never had the chance to meet my great-grandmother, Mary, because she died fighting it before I was born. I also saw how sad it was when my friends saw their mom, Mrs. Julie Finch also lose her battle. I have seen how hard it has been for my Abu (grandfather) Silvio Garcia, my aunt Alison Schmuckal, and my little sister’s good friend McKenna West to have to fight and stay strong.
While I am in the water, I will be swimming in memory and in honor of these people who have been sick and fighting, and who never gave up. I hope to help them by raising awareness and money to fight cancer and to provide support for other cancer patients and survivors. Please support me as I make a difference on September 20, 2014.
